Helen vs. Megan
Those of you who read this blog on a regular basis will already know this – Helen Mirren is a big hero of mine. Wonderfully talented, gentle, and HOT for any age.
Imagine my delight when I read this morning that Helen Mirren and Megan Fox (of transformers fame) are being pitted against each other in the Esquire sexiest woman contest. They are opening it up to online votes this year and so far Helen is winning!
And what did the ever humble Brit have to say? “Personally I think Ms. Fox is one of the smartest, coolest, and sexiest creatures in the Western Hemisphere. I am gobsmacked.” Well, darling, in my opinon, you wipe the floor with Miss Fox.
Yes, Yes, Megan is hot. And she knows it. She has the virtue of youth on her side. As Marie Stopes said, “You can take no credit for beauty at 16. (or in this case, 22) But if you are beautiful at 60, it will be your soul’s own doing.”
I hate it when people say, “you look great….for your age.” Yes, Helen is 63 and doesn’t look like most 63 year olds I know. But what difference does it make how old she is? She’s beautiful! And the reason has as much to do with her “great rack” as Esquire says as it does to do with her obvious comfort with herself and her joy of life. The experiences she’s had and lessons she’s learned are what make her gorgeous, even more than her fabulous (for her age *eye roll*) body.
So go now and vote for the woman you feel is sexiest. Vote for the glory of youth or fabulous experience. There are 14 other choices if neither of these women is your first choice.
As far as I’m concerned, every woman I know deserves the sexy prize. Whether you’re 20 or 60, as long as you’re you and living your life on your terms, you’re beautiful to me. You all get my vote! Go out this weekend and celebrate your own sexy self.
Hugs,
Christie
Women Rock the House at Any Age!
We women have spent many years – even decades – bemoaning the fact that men rule the world and we’re the accessories. This seems especially true in the entertainment industry. Actresses, if they haven’t made it by 30, are basically screwed. On air personalities, once they hit middle age are usually replaced or put on the back burner whereas men often work well into their senior years. Oh, how unfair, we whine.
Well, my dears, the times they seem to be a-changing. Mary Hart, at nearly 50, is still anchoring Entertainment Tonight. Barbara Walters, Katie Couric and many others are still the face of journalism along with stalwarts like Tom Brokaw and Lloyd Robertson.
In the movie world, it’s been a great year for those who might have been considered washed up a decade ago.
At 60, Meryl Streep had a wonderful year with Julie and Julia and It’s Complicated.
In Julie and Julia she is engaging and funny as Julia Child. From giving the uptight examiner at the Cordon Bleu School a raspberry to beautiful and sexy moments with her husband (the gloriously supportive and understated Stanley Tucci) she is by far the best part of the movie. She shows older women in the light of someone who can pursue her dreams at any age, is sexually active (even though Julia was a virgin until 40) and can have a blast doing all of it. Meryl is by far the most interesting part of this movie. Amy Adams as Julie Powell who created the Julie/Julia project that the movie is based on, is quite dull. The contrast between the joy of age and truly knowing yourself and whiney youth is stark.
It’s Complicated has Meryl playing a newly divorced woman having an affair with 2 men, including her ex husband. What a joy to see a woman of age having a great time in the bedroom! And being the object of desire. Rock on, ladies, we are sexy at any age!
Helen Mirren, who I’ve mentioned here before, is 64. This year she has a movie called The Last Station where she plays Leo Tolstoy’s wife,
secretary and muse Sofya. At a time when many are seeking a pension, Helen has created another older woman who is strong, in love, wants sex, fights for her rights, works hard and is loyal to those she loves (Sofya wrote out War and Peace 6 times – by hand!). From what I have seen in the trailer, she’s by far the most interesting part of the movie, even ecplipsing Christopher Plummer (whom I love) as T0lstoy. In addition, Helen has 3 more movies coming out this year! Women Rock!
Another icon, Betty White – 87, mopped the floor with Sandra Bullock (who’s no spring chicken anymore, either and had a very good year as well with The Blind Side ) and Ryan Reynolds in The Proposal. Her comic timing is impeccable and she has so much fun doing what she does. She is a master and hasn’t lost one iota of her brilliance despite the fact that she’s at the age that many are sitting around bemoaning the life they wished they had or the past they wish they could have back. Women are tough so never quit!
The success story of the year is Jane Lynch. Turning 50 this year and having been a bit player in many movies,
including Julie and Julia as Julia’s sister, Jane came into her own this year with the huge hit Glee. Jane plays an hilariously nasty Cheerleading coach in this series about a high school glee club. She is the villain and she obviously loves it! One of the big costumes this year for halloween was a short blonde wig and a track suit with a holier than thou, uber bitch attitude as Sue Sylvester from Glee. Jane shows it’s never too late to hit your stride. Keep going, ladies, your dream may be just around the corner!
No matter what your age, ladies, you are amazing, beautiful, sexy and worthy. Always remember that. As you go into the new year, grab your life by the horns and go for your dreams. No matter where you are on the age scale, you can learn, grow and LIVE LARGE!
Hugs and Happy New Year!
Be Beautiful, Be YOU!
Weird Dream

How many times have you woken up and said, “Wow, weird dream.” How many times have you been talking to someone who shifted the topic by saying, “I had such a weird dream last night.” Every time I say or hear these comments I think, “when is a dream NOT weird.”
Dreams are inherently cryptic. The unconscious is playing around in your brain. It has no logic or coherent timeline. People are identified as someone you know but look nothing like them. You’re able to do things you would never be capable of due to gravity and other natural constraints. Time shifts at will. People morph into animals or pulsing blobs. We try to make sense of them in our logical waking brains, but for the most part it’s pretty much a frustrating folly.
Ironically, all this said, I had a dream that kind of made sense the other night. I am a theatre and movie lover. I’m not big on award shows but I always watch the Oscars. In this dream, I was a presenter at the Oscars. It was a little different than most in that one person said the names of the nominees and then five people came up to talk more about each of those nominees. I was to talk about Helen Mirren. As we all went up, I realized that everyone else had an envelope in their hand, except me. I started to panic and went to a table at the side of the stage to find out where my envelope was. This ruined the flow of the whole show. So someone else took the reins and simply skipped the step we 5 were to do and announced the winner – Helen Mirren. I was mortified. Not only did I screw up the show, I also didn’t get to talk about one of my heroes who ended up with a statuette. I couldn’t even possibly talk to her now after what I had done.
I awoke from the dream and was quite agitated. I went into that space so many of us go to so often – beating myself up for a stupid mistake. I went around and around with it for a few laps in my head before I, in a more awake state, realized, “wait a second, it’s bad enough to do that when you’re conscious, this was a DREAM!”
It struck me how easy it is for us to get into the beat myself up mode. It’s such a useless place to dwell. It does us no good whatsoever.
For one, what’s done is done. Replaying it over and over like a bad piece of music isn’t going to help or change anything. All it will do is make you crazy and self conscious. You’ll become less likely to take chances or to speak up. You’ll start to beat yourself down until you become a shell of yourself.
Also, why dwell on the negative? Think about it – when you do something that doesn’t turn out very well, do you think about the dozen things you did well before or after that one event? No. Human nature is to keep that one moment in the brain in full technicolor on repeat.
Why not pick something you did exceptionally well and put that on the repeato panel? Think about the results: rather than beating yourself down, you’d be building yourself up. You might discover that you’re more willing to take chances and speak your mind. Your sense of self will remain in tact and grow stronger. You will go boldly through your life with confidence knowing that we all make missteps and it’s not such a big deal.
So, my lovely kitties, remember to focus on the positive, even in your subconscious moments. Be Beautiful, Be YOU and celebrate your great moments.
Love ya!
